Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla, and mix well.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  6. Divide the batter into two equal portions. In one portion, stir in additional cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor.
  7. Scoop alternating tablespoons of the two batters into each cupcake liner.
  8. Swirl a toothpick through the batters for a marbled effect.
  9. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Let cool before frosting.
